aspartame

I have heard so many different reports about the effects of aspartame on the body, one of which is that it can contribute to symptoms of fibromyalgia (which I supposedly have). All of these reports got me thinking more and more about the truth of aspartame and also made me wonder why it is still allowed by the FDA if it is SO HORRIBLE when consumed. Anyway, here are two websites that I found and want to share.

I must confess; I also found this website, http://www.lovethetruth.com/truth_about_aspartame.htm, so go figure!

I don't really drink many diet products, and I sweeten my coffee with Splenda, which is still a relatively new product, so no telling what they'll say about it in 5 years! My friend and fellow blogger Melanie introduced me to Agave Nectar...an all natural sweetener which I LOVE, but is expensive. I bought a $3.99 container that lasted me and Mike about 3 days of coffee drinking! I haven't even made it back to Tulsa to buy more...I would love to buy a GALLON like Melanie did!

I'd love to know your thoughts!

Hey Margo - Stevia is another natural sweetener that you would find in the supplement area of a health food store. Doesn't taste quite as nice in coffee as agave, though. I've tried the (Stevia) liquid drops as well as the powder - love the liquid drops in my iced coffee! Also, I have a good friend who has recently found healing for her fibromyalgia - I'd love to connect you guys!

Xylitol is a natural sugar that comes from corncobs or birch. Supposedly because it is a 5 carbon sugar (rather than 6) it helps to fight bacteria. It is sweet like sugar but has 40% fewer calories. Gum with Xylitol (like Spry) is actually recommended by dentists since it can help clean your teeth. Personally I trust natural sugars a whole lot more. Plus, when I have aspartame, it gives me a headache. I don't think that's a good sign.

You know what--sugar is also a natural sweetener. You can get the raw stuff. It is cheeper and it wont give you cancer like the man made crap! I would rather have a few sugar calories and enjoy the real taste than to have a man made imitation that will hurt my body. Just my thoughts...
